A1 and A2 English Test
A1 and A2 English Test for Spouse Visa Extension
If you are applying for a UK spouse or partner visa, or extending your visa after 2.5 years with an FLR(M) application, you must prove that you meet the English language requirement. For most applicants, this means passing a Home Office–approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).
- For your first spouse visa (entry clearance or initial FLR(M)), the minimum level is A1.
- For your first extension after 2.5 years, you must show at least A2 in speaking and listening.
- Later, for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and British citizenship, the requirement rises to B1 plus the Life in the UK Test.
At Hi Solicitors, our immigration specialists can advise you on which test you need, whether you are exempt, and how to ensure your application is not delayed by mistakes.
What Is the A1/A2 English Test?
The A1 and A2 tests are speaking and listening exams designed for immigration purposes. They are:
- Taken with a Home Office–approved provider
- Focused only on communication skills (no reading or writing required)
- Short interviews with an examiner (around 7–10 minutes, depending on provider)
- Assessed against the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standards
You must take a SELT at an approved test centre. Common providers include:
- IELTS Life Skills for UKVI (A1/A2/B1)
- Trinity College London GESE (Grade 2 for A1, Grade 3 for A2)
- LanguageCert SELT
- Pearson PTE Home
- PSI Skills for English SELT
The test usually costs between £150–£200 depending on the provider and location.
Who Needs the Test?
You must take the A1/A2 English test if you are:
- Applying for a first UK spouse or partner visa (A1)
- Applying for a spouse visa extension (FLR(M)) after 2.5 years (A2)
- Aged 18 to 65 and not otherwise exempt
Exemptions
You may not need to take the English test if:
- You are from a majority English-speaking country recognised by the Home Office
- You hold a degree taught in English, confirmed by ECCTIS (formerly UK NARIC)
- You are under 18 or over 65
- You have a long-term physical or mental condition supported by medical evidence
Common Problems Applicants Face
- Booking the wrong level (e.g. A1 instead of A2 for an extension)
- Taking the test at a non-approved centre
- Using the wrong type of IELTS (must be IELTS for UKVI, not general IELTS Academic/General Training)
- Certificates from providers that are no longer approved
- Not leaving enough time to re-sit the test if they fail
Our solicitors regularly advise clients to avoid these mistakes and ensure their FLR(M) or spouse visa extension is not refused.

Do I need A1 or A2 for my visa?
